International Initiative on Fundamental Parameters (IIFP)

The International Initiative on Fundamental Parameters (IIFP) was launched by the LNHB and the PTB to address the need for reliable data to characterise the interactions of X-rays with matter. These data, or “fundamental atomic parameters”, are of paramount importance for the interpretation of X-ray fluorescence-based analytical techniques, in order to provide reliable quantitative results. The fields of applications are many and varied, ranging from fundamental physics to the characterisation of innovative materials at the nanoscale, as well as environment and cultural heritage.

Within this framework, different experiments and theoretical calculations have been carried out through the combined efforts of several national metrology institutes, university laboratories and industrial companies to determine new atomic parameters. These results are expected to benefit a wide community of users.

Meetings are held regularly to review progress and foster collaboration between partners.
