The LNHB coordinates the European metrology project on radon, RadonNET (23IND07). In compliance with Directive 2013/59/Euratom, member states are required to mitigate 222Rn activity concentration in public and private buildings, where levels regularly exceed the reference threshold of 300 Bq·m⁻³. Authorities are mandated to implement mitigation strategies that adhere to basic safety standards, ensuring the protection of citizens from ionising radiation exposure caused by 222Rn progenies.
This project addresses the challenge of quantifying 222Rn activity concentrations indoors, particularly in large buildings designed for future cities, with an emphasis on connected, low-energy consumption structures. The development of methods and sensors for detecting radon activity concentrations, along with the creation of a quality-assured sensor network, will enhance on-site 222Rn metrology and provide essential support to the European radiation protection industry.
